Interactions with government representatives often present cues of danger because of the power imbalance. Additionally, people are often in the interaction because of a need, which create even more imbalance (I could cite myself here)Without a consideration of what happens in the body, guided by the nervous system, what happens in public service interactions are viewed as chosen or voluntary, which can then be seen as disrespectful, resisting, or non-compliant.This is what happens- danger→autonomic response→survival mode→response/behaviorTelling people one thing, when they feel another thing in their body (neuroception registers it), creates a strong mistrust: that the other person/message can’t be trusted and that they can’t trust their own internal feelings (all in pursuit of survival). Our bodies have a rapid-response survival systemThe ANS plays a huge role in shaping thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and beliefs. In every interactions, individuals are scanning cues from the other persons, for instance their tone of voice, eye contact, body posture, and facial expression. As the interaction proceeds, the individual will react to these signals by activating (sympathetic), shutting down (dorsal), or engaging/connecting (ventral vagal). There’s a lot of work that tries to support interactions by improving the context, like workplace morale etc or the individual (self-care, yoga, meditation) but awareness of what happens in the body of those in an interaction works at the site, in real time, without requiring large scale investment or programmatic change beforehand. MY NOTE: solutions for public service interactionsIf one party in the interaction is in an activated survival responses, the other party will react, often with a with their own survival response and shift in their autonomic state. We can offer co-regulation when we learn how to self-regulate.Research that “that help to explain the interplay of the autonomic messages and responses between all participants” can lead to trainings and programs that teach techniques to become aware of and manage autonomic states, which can improve public service interactions. This type of research increases the opporunity for awareness, understanding, and more safety, as well as repair in places where harm has previously been done. `a neurophysiological approach is all about considering autonomic state as the basis for our behavior and felt experience, including whether we feel safe or in danger within our experiences/interactions.The goal in public service interactions must now be to respect physiological state of those we serveWe need to explore the structures of interactions in order to understand what features may make safety inaccessible. Our best ways of interacting—including social behavior and emotional regulation—can only happen when we feel safe.
