In every interactions, individuals are scanning cues from the other persons, for instance their tone of voice, eye contact, body posture, and facial expression. As the interaction proceeds, the individual will react to these signals by activating (sympathetic), shutting down (dorsal), or engaging/connecting (ventral vagal).when we are with people we know and others who are warm, with kind faces and voices, the neuroception will translate to a sense of safety and likely a positive social interaction. Our autonomic states shift in response to cues of safety or danger. We feel safe based on cues that we get from our environment. Safety is not the removal of threat; it comes from the cues we receive. Neuroception triggers shifts in autonomic state. Our nervous systems interacts with the world through neuroception, which constantly scans for cues of safety and danger without our awareness. It scans within our bodies, around us in the environment, as well as in the interaction with others. Neuroception listens inside, outside, and betweenNeuroception works before the brain can form a thought.Neuroception determines if you are “open to connection and the possibility of change or locked in a protective response and stuck in a survival story.”Neuroception allows the autonomic nervous system to scan for cues of safety and danger.
