In 1917 he wrote to Sophie Liebknecht, wife of the jailed Marxist leader Karl Liebknecht: "Perhaps my indescribable suffering at being unable to produce is my most accurate response to the present situation, and I would sooner submit to that suffering than make any concession in the essential."
