I was thinking a lot about the concept of integration—the act of bringing together smaller components into a single system that functions as one—when I made this collage. It's hard to integrate the big things in our lives: the lessons, the heartbreaks, the passions, the questions... How can we live a life that embodies the big stuff, the important stuff?
And then I look at this collage and I think of quilting... OMG, it's all integration. Collaging and quilting, even baking (my making-obsession before these), are about pulling smaller parts together--carefully, thoughtfully, beautifully--into one thing that says so much more all together. Making is my way of processing and learning, my way of integrating.
